98th-minute goal by Zaccagni sends Italy through, leaves Croatia out

Italy is through to the Round of 16 at EURO 2024 after a dramatic 98th-minute goal by Mattia Zaccagni secured a 1-1 draw against Croatia.

The goal, which came just seconds from the end of the match, sparked wild celebrations among the Italian players and fans. It also meant that Italy finished second in Group A, behind England, and will now face the runners-up from Group B in the last 16.

Croatia, meanwhile, will be left to rue what might have been. They outperformed Italy in terms of expected goals (xG) and shots on target, but it was Italy's goal at the end that proved to be the decisive factor.

"It was a tough match, but we never gave up," said a delighted Zaccagni after the match. "We knew that we needed a point to qualify, and we fought until the end to get it."

Italy's manager, Roberto Mancini, was also full of praise for his team's performance.

"I'm very proud of the players," he said. "They showed great character and determination to come back from behind and secure the draw."

Italy will now face the runners-up from Group B in the last 16. The match will be played on June 26 at Wembley Stadium.
